On your Amazon or Mekong cruise with Aqua Expeditions, we have expanded our land-based and water-based activities to include cycling, kayaking, swimming, fishing and more so that our guests can enjoy a more diverse, multidimensional experience while visiting our destinations in Peru, Vietnam and Cambodia.
MEKONG RIVER CRUISES: ALL TERRAIN BIKING
A unique way to observe the exotic rituals of daily life along the mighty Mekong is on two wheels, stopping to photograph catfish sellers, the planting of rice paddies or local children playing with the family’s domesticated water buffalo. Beginning in 2015, we are the only Mekong River cruise ship to offer our Aqua Mekong guests complimentary bikes which they can hop on anytime to explore the picturesque riverbanks of the Mekong River. These all-terrain touring bikes are available for both adults and children. Guests can stay fit cycling the flat paved and dirt trails next to the river while discovering, at their leisure, local village life. Aqua Mekong passengers have the option of 8 to 15 kilometer biking routes. Say hello to a crimson robed monk, photograph stilted Khmer houses and ornately embellished pagodas or, perhaps, enjoy an invitation from a new friend to dine in their nearby home.
AMAZON RIVER CRUISES: ALL TERRAIN BIKING
Biking is such a popular way of discovering daily life in a riverside community that we decided we also wanted to offer our guests on our Amazon cruise ships this fun and energizing mode of transport. Guests on our 3, 4 and 7-night cruises will have the opportunity to cycle around the town of Nauta with ten bikes available for guests on each ship. Nauta is a classical Peruvian town in the north-eastern part of Loreto Province. It is located on the north bank of the Marañón River, south of Iquitos and just a few miles from the confluence of the Río Ucayali. Biking through Nauta guests will discover traditional Peruvian houses and schools, shop for unique Peruvian and Amazonia souvenirs and cycle next to a major tributary of the Upper Amazon.
KAYAKING ON MEKONG RIVER CRUISES
As popular as cycling on the Mekong, kayaking has been a long-time favorite way for our guests to explore the Amazon River. New for 2015, guests of the Aqua Mekong can now take advantage of eight double-kayaks throughout various locations in Cambodia. For example, kayaking in Oknha Tey, guests can paddle to see local silk-weavers at work, or kayak the Moat Khla region by Tonle Sap Lake and/or in the waterways in the Kampong Chnnang Province.
KAYAKING, SWIMMING AND FISHING ON AMAZON RIVER CRUISES
Guests can also try kayaking the calm waters of the Amazon River while keeping an eye out for Amazon wildlife or even try fishing for piranhas – by kayak! Whether you’ve never cast a fishing line before or you’re a passionate wrangler, fishing for vibrant red-bellied piranhas in the black waters of the Pacaya River is sure to set hearts racing with anticipation. Our highly-trained guides also bring our guests by skiff to swim in one of the most beautiful natural swimming pools on the earth in the Amazon’s warm, welcoming waters, cosseted by her lush tropical rain forest.
