A Dip into Design: Introducing Aqua Blu

Steeped in history, Aqua Blu, a former Royal Naval explorer, was converted into an Italian luxury yacht prior to being fully refurbished in 2019 to become Aqua Expeditions’ first ever coastal yacht. The long-range expedition-class yacht is permanently based in the East Indonesian Archipelago with year-round departures to Raja Ampat, Komodo National Park and the Spice Islands. Partnering with internationally renowned yacht designer Cor D. Rover, the refurbished vessel marries modern contemporary style with glimpses into her former life as the HMS Beagle, a wooden deck ship that served as a versatile asset for the British Navy.

NEUTRAL NUANCES

Soothing, minimalist palettes of greys and neutrals enhance the capacious spaces of the 198 ft yacht, providing a relaxed environment for guests to enjoy. Stone tabletops and light wood finishes provide texture, as does the original oak parquet flooring and plush carpeting.

OBJECTS OF DESIRE

Throughout the yacht, one can find various objects – carefully collected to exude a ‘sense of place,’ including antique etchings depicting the Banda Neira (Spice Islands) and vintage maps of Eastern Indonesia, all original prints from lithographers and artists of the day.

CUSTOM PORCELAIN

Custom plateware and porcelain are inspired by Alfred Russell Wallace’s 1700s drawings and sketches, depicting his discovery of the evolutionary theory alongside Charles Darwin. Hand-painted with gold and platinum on a celadon porcelain base, Birgit Galli Zugaro collaborated with Gaya Studio in Indonesia on these very special dining and tea sets.

ORGANIC SOAKS

Roomy bathrooms offer a refreshing respite and boast amenities and spa products specifically designed for Aqua Blu, created by Birgit Galli Zugaro and David J. Cole with a local Balinese supplier using Indonesian herbs and spices. All ingredients are as natural as possible, sulfate and palm oil-free, and sunblock that is designed to be reef safe.

ALFRESCO SOJOURNS

Designed for lazy days as well as more active mornings and evenings, the bridge deck features a soaking tub where guests can recline and take in the scenic views. The outdoor space welcomes stretches on the yoga mats or weight training sessions at the gym. Plenty of comfortable seating and lounging throughout provides ample opportunity to enjoy the sea breeze.
